After listening to MBV i thought Ride and Slowdive had the most boring textures ever, but now i realize they're decent pop rock bands. It feels like every shoegaze project that isn't electronica could be categorized as either noise pop, psychedelic rock or dream pop, with vast differences between all of them. Maybe the genre is a misnomer entirely.
